Type Hike
Typography + Illustration + Poster Design
This project was an add on to a previously well known project called type hike. Type Hike is a collaborative non-profit design project that celebrates and supports the outdoors through typography. It was created by David Rygiol and James Walker. The project was born from the belief that all designers are obligated to use their talent and ability to make the world a more beautiful place. They tackled creating a poster series that would bring attention and awareness to all national parks. The professor who led my class, Meena Khalili was one of the original designers on the type hike project who created the poster for Lassen. I created a poster for New River Gorge that played off my Forte which is typography. In this Typographic Design class I used the skills I learned to take the Playfair Display typeface and alter it to include my own calligraphic style. This personal touch branded me as a designer and my love and passion for typography. I included these illustrated butterflies to represent the butterfly reserve New River Gorge is well known for.
Later on the Graphic Design Faculty chose 4 posters one for each of the newly added national parks to be included and added to the original collection. My design for New River Gorge was selected and now remains with the original collection of the Type Hike series.
